Court Ruling Redefines Marriage

May 20, 2008 - Denver, CO -- Promise Keepers has always been committed to igniting and uniting men to be passionate followers of Jesus Christ through the effective communication of the 7 Promises.

Promise 4 states “A Promise Keeper is committed to building strong marriages and families through love, protection and biblical values.”  We share the same biblical stance taken by Evangelicals and Catholics: that sex is a good gift from God to be enjoyed in the context of heterosexual marriage between one man and one woman.  So called “same sex marriage” violates God’s creative design for a husband and a wife as defined in the Bible (Matthew 19:4-5; Romans 1:24-27; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10).

We live in a broken world where marriages are often violated by adultery and pornography.  These contribute to damaged marriages and divorce, which also displease God and lead to human suffering.  As Christians we must be concerned that the erosion of the biblical understanding of marriage will devalue it.  This will lead to fewer men and women marrying.  This in turn will lead to children being born and raised outside of marriage, and often in a single parent home without a father.  A responsible father plays a key role in the life of a child.

In light of this, we are also appalled at the recent court decision in California striking down the definition of marriage as only between one man and one woman, because in the 2000 referendum the majority of voters (61 percent) affirmed the traditional definition of marriage.

We call on Christian men everywhere to pray that God would strengthen the institution of marriage in California and in our country as a whole.  And to you married men – your wife and family must be high priorities in your life.  It is within these Christian homes that children can best understand the love of their heavenly Father, because they have experienced the model of fatherhood as God designed it.

As sinful, fallible people, we depend on the grace and power of Jesus Christ to enable us to keep our promises.  Over the years we have seen again and again that the Good News of Jesus Christ is able to bring men out of every kind of darkness and transform them by the power of God.
